when cost stops being “production” and becomes architecture

There’s a hard warning that keeps showing up across game design and game development literature: game economy vs real-world economy.

Not because you can’t ship a game without touching it, but because once a project grows — or is simply ambitious — the collision between those two economies has killed highly anticipated projects. And today you don’t even need to be a massive MMO to feel it. With clustering, cloud, services, databases, procedural generation, and (sometimes) blockchains, the problem can emerge in medium games… or in small games trying to play in the “big leagues”.

Back then, operational cost was external: production, invoices, ops. Now it can become an emergent property of the system itself.

That’s why, in the engine I’m building, I want to treat this as a true architectural transversal. Not as monetization, and not as “charging the player”, but as a mechanism of operational accounting — tokenized and observable — so the runtime is cost-aware by design.


The real problem: technical budgets that are economic budgets

In any serious server engine, even if nobody says it out loud, budgets already exist:

  • CPU per tick / server frame
  • RAM and cache
  • DB reads/writes
  • disk I/O / object storage
  • egress and network
  • expensive operations (rehydration, streaming, generation, pathfinding, etc.)
  • (if applicable) external transactions or commits

Those budgets are used for scheduling, LOD, avoiding spikes, and keeping latency under control.

What is rarely treated as engine design — at least not in server engines — is the more uncomfortable but unavoidable layer underneath:

  1. which part of that budget has a real operational cost
  2. which part of that cost is intrinsic (the minimum for the world to exist)
  3. which part is incremental (driven by real usage: player and system activity)
  4. how to stimulate engagement/market activity within a scenario that remains coherent with those costs
  5. how to optimize operational cost based on gameplay consumption, not just profiling and patches

The industry’s common pattern is to arrive late: first come spikes, degradation, invoices, hard decisions… then emergency fixes.

I want the opposite: the engine should be born with a built-in “thermometer and ledger”.


The thesis: cost awareness as a first-class engine property

If I’m already measuring resources to plan, I can go one step further and turn that consumption into a formal signal, with internal accounting.

I’m not trying to inject “euros” into gameplay. What I’m designing is a mechanism that satisfies this idea:

“Every operation that costs something in the real world must be measurable, attributable, tokenizable, and observable.”

That gives me two things engines usually lack:

  • attribution: knowing which subsystem, world, LOD, action, or entity is actually driving cost
  • levers: the ability to act before cost turns into chaotic degradation

The solution: tokenized resource-by-use + an in-memory ledger

At the core is a layer I can call:

RTA — Resource Tokenization & Accounting

Its job is to turn technical consumption into accountable units (internal tokens), record movements in an in-memory ledger, and emit signals that drive engine policies.

What this layer does

  1. measures runtime operations:

    • CPU-ms, RAM-MB·s, DB reads/writes, IOps, net GB, rehydrations, streaming, etc.
  2. attributes consumption:

    • world, node, LOD, subsystem
    • and, when applicable, a logical actor (corporation, org, player, policy)
  3. tokenizes:

    • converts a heterogeneous resource vector into stable internal units
  4. settles:

    • records debit/credit entries and balances per time window
  5. exposes observability:

    • top cost drivers, heatmaps, marginal cost per world, spike trends
  6. feeds policies:

    • materialization gating, controlled degradation, batching, prefetch, variant switching, etc.

The important idea is that above this layer I no longer need to talk about cloud billing or invoices. I only see signals, internal budgets, and governable decisions.


Why the ledger must be in memory

This lives in the engine’s hot loop. If every accounting event hits a database, the system loses by definition.

When I say “in memory” I don’t mean “non-rigorous”. I mean:

  • O(1) cost per sample
  • aggregation by windows (1s / 10s / 1m)
  • eventual snapshots/rollups to cheap storage
  • optional hash commitments if I want integrity/auditability

It’s the classic high-throughput telemetry pattern: write cheaply, aggregate in batches, persist what matters.


Double-entry accounting: how I avoid “magic”

Even as an internal ledger, I want it to be non-magical. The most robust pattern is double-entry.

Every consumption event produces:

  • a debit (who consumed)
  • a credit (who “provided”)

That prevents inconsistencies, makes auditing possible, and keeps future options open (redistribution, internal markets, incentives).

Practically, it also handles a very real issue: retries and partial failures.

So I separate two phases:

  • reserve (hold): before executing an expensive operation
  • settle (charge): after completion, when actual usage is known

Where it lives architecturally: inside RAL administration

In my case, this layer naturally belongs near the part of the engine that administers RAL (Resource Abstraction Layer).

Because RAL is where the engine makes decisions that materialize cost:

  • fetching assets
  • hydrating templates
  • selecting variants
  • transcoding
  • caching vs eviction
  • streaming chunks
  • resolving dependencies
  • choosing the effective materialization LOD

RAL is my “valve”: what enters the runtime flows through it. Therefore:

  • I can measure without blind spots
  • and I have real levers for optimization and degradation

RTA doesn’t have to be RAL. I prefer it as a Governor coupled to RAL.

RAL + Governor: a minimal interface

  • EstimateCost(op, ctx) -> estimate
  • TryReserve(estimate) -> reservation | denied(fallback hints)
  • Settle(reservation, actual_usage)
  • GetShadowPrices(ctx)

With that, when something is expensive, I can choose alternatives without drama:

  • cheaper variant
  • lower LOD
  • defer 200–500ms
  • batch reads
  • partial materialization

Shadow prices: useful signals without injecting euros

So far this is operational accounting. Projecting its “emergence” into the actual game or simulation is still work to be done; I’m not claiming that part is solved.

But even before that projection, one concept becomes immediately valuable:

shadow prices

They are not euros. They’re internal multipliers that reflect:

  • current marginal cost (saturation, spikes)
  • subsystem priority / SLA
  • cluster state
  • world quality mode

And if one day I decide to translate them into diegetic fiction, I can do so cleanly:

  • “public registry / notary”
  • “interstellar bandwidth”
  • “compute capacity”
  • “bureaucracy / processing”
  • “energy / infrastructure”

Yet even if I never translate them into gameplay, they already improve:

  • scheduling
  • spike avoidance
  • content sizing
  • cache decisions based on cost-to-rebuild

What I get on day one (without touching game economy)

Even if I never project this into the world yet:

1) Real visibility

I can answer with data instead of intuition:

  • which subsystem costs the most?
  • which world/LOD is eating the budget?
  • which action drives incremental cost?
  • what’s baseline (intrinsic) vs incremental cost?

2) Quality control without chaos

Instead of “it’s down” or “it’s slow”, I have:

  • controlled degradation
  • automatic batching
  • fallback policies

3) Content with explicit cost

I stop designing content “blind” to cost.
A high-fidelity template or variant has a cost profile and the engine can govern it.

4) A solid base for future emergence

When I decide to connect this to economy/simulation:

  • metering is already there
  • the ledger is already there
  • attribution is already there
  • signals (shadow prices) are already there

The hard part isn’t inventing the economy — it’s building the instrument.


Conclusion: an engine that knows its own thermodynamics

The mental shift I’m aiming for is this:

“Cost isn’t an external billing topic.
It becomes an internal system property when you scale.”

A mechanism of tokenized, observable operational accounting lets me treat that property as first-class:

  • measurable
  • attributable
  • governable
  • and later, projectable into simulation mechanics

Today I’ve described the layer and its natural location (RAL). The next step, when it’s time, is the fun part: projecting how shadow prices and operational accounting can generate markets, incentives, and engagement without falling into shallow monetization.

But the key point is that, from the start, the engine would already have something very few engines ship with natively:

an internal resource economy that can be observed and governed.
